Lin came upstairs to my computer, and I told him what I was doing. I researched safe names to use for men characters in a book and came up with Alex. On Wednesday morning, I knew I had to change my first husband’s name. Good thing I brought it up to my book coach. So somehow, while I was resizing the pictures, I forgot about changing his name in the revisions Tuesday night. My husband, Lin, had offered the same advice while we discussed this in the hot tub on Monday night. I haven’t talked to him in over forty years, so calling was out of the question. The solutions they offered: change his name or call him and ask permission. None of what I wrote about him was derogatory, but I have become super cautious about using people’s names. On Tuesday morning, I asked my book coach and group about using my ex-husband’s name in my book. So, I resized and resized and resized, going back and forth several times between KDP and Vellum. Then, I have several pictures in the book and the placement in Vellum wasn’t true to size. So, in Vellum, the program I use to create my books, I moved it forward one page, but then had to upload the document again. KDP has an online previewer, thank God! First, I realized I had the Copyright page in the wrong place-after the Table of Contents, not before it. Anticipation about this day had hovered over me for weeks. When a customer searches on Amazon, their search engines use keywords and book categories to find the book-super important for the sales of a book! ![]() Lots of research goes into launching a new book for keywords and categories. I filled in all the required information, which I prepared for a couple of days ahead of time. Let me share it with you!Įagerly on Monday, first, I created the new e-book space on KDP, an affiliate of Amazon. Why? Well, if you’ve ever had the displeasure of putting an e-book together, you’ll have experienced the excruciating pain of making sense of any of this - it’s a huge pain in the rectum, finally resolved by an elegant piece of software that takes most of the hassle out of the process.Moving parts of publishing an e-book-so many for sure! My new e-book, Hair on Fire: A Heartwarming & Humorous Christmas Memoir, has made it through the ringer, available now! This week I struggled with the process and succeeded. A bit of a setback if you’re a Windows or Linux jockey, but for the Mac fans among us, you’re golden.Īs you can tell, I’m a wee bit excited about Vellum. Vellum is only available for Mac, with no plans in the pipeline for other platforms. Once you have a license you can make as many books with as many pen names for as long as you like. If you want to upgrade from one tier to another, you’ll be charged $100, so it may be worth doing a bit of planning ahead. The company’s pricing scheme is interesting, with two tiers available: a $200 tier for e-books only, or a $250 tier for both electron-powered books and books: Deforestation Edition. ![]() Best of all, you can proof it all using any PDF reader - such as the Preview app. Either way, Vellum takes care of all of that, plus converting images to print-ready black and white. You also need to do typography geekery such as widow prevention (avoiding single sentences on a page) and spread balancing. Taking an e-book for an outing into meatspace includes knowing about margins, trim sizes, font sizes and page numbering, and creating front matter, headers and footers and page-numbered tables of contents. Vellum 2.0 can create print-ready files for e-books, even if you’re not a massive print nerd (like yours truly). The biggest change for today’s 2.0 launch is that the package now supports creating books for print, too, with an integration for on-demand printing services like IngramSpark and CreateSpace. Vellum’s previous version has been out for a few years, and there are plenty of e-books that have been created using the software already. While Washington’s annual in-person celebration of Japanese history and culture may be on hold, there’s a few timeless pieces of Japan - the cherry trees and Tokugawa Iemitsu’s lantern among them - that stand as silent but enduring symbols of unity between countries that were once enemies. I don’t think they’d want to just destroy it.” "It survived until 1954 (the year the pair was split up and the Tidal Basin lantern was sent to Washington). “It’s survived the many episodes where these stone and bronze lanterns were damaged or destroyed, or sold to foreign countries,” she said. ![]() lantern’s twin, though perhaps not well displayed or labeled, is still around. This s akoku policy stayed in place for over 200 years, until an American naval commander, Commodore Matthew Perry, dropped anchor at Yokohama in 1853. The strict, brutally enforced policy of total isolation slammed the door on foreign trade, foreign religion and foreigners, who faced summary execution if they remained in Japan. A grandson of clan patriarch and dynasty founder Tokugawa Ieyasu, Iemitsu is mainly remembered for the Sakoku Edict of 1635. The lantern was originally carved to commemorate Tokugawa Iemitsu (1604-1651), the third shōgun of the mighty Tokugawa clan, which unified feudal Japan under its stern rule for nearly 270 years. The lantern was created in the middle of the 17th century for the funeral ceremony of Tokugawa Iemitsu, a Japanese shōgun, one of the iron-fisted military leaders who ruled the Japanese islands in the centuries before the 1868 Meiji Restoration elevated the emperor from a ceremonial titleholder to actual power.Īlmost every square inch of the sculpture tells a story. The command successfully mounted the volume, and again automatically altered the fstab to include the specified option, in this case mount point, and removed all other options. I took my fstab experiment one step further and this is where I hit a wall. I believe the options would only show in mount output and have an effect if the volume was mounted via fstab (as it would during boot), so.Ĥ. I then rebooted as I did during every other test, never did the volume mount on boot, and no increase in log verbosity. I also watched the system and nssdbg logs, and did not notice any uptick in verbosity or debug info. Next i used the "mount" command to see if the options would be displayed for this mount, but they weren't, only "acfs" and "local" were there. LABEL=volname none acfs rw,mnt_retrans=10,mnt_recon=hard,mnt_type=bg,verbose=yes,debug=yes Which mounted the volume successfully and automatically altered the fstab line to look like this: Xsanctl mount volname -mnt_retrans=10 -mnt_recon=hard -mnt_type=bg -verbose=yes -debug=yes" ![]() I went a step further and used xsanctl to add several options to fstab (in order to see if I could get more info and potentially make the client continue attempting to mount once the LUNs are found) but I could never get those options to be respected or show an effect. These 3 LUNs should be able to be scanned plenty fast enough to register the LUNs before the mount attempt unless there is an order of operations issue in the code.ģ. As a test we zoned out all other storage controllers except the one chassis that contained the MDJ, and 2 LUNs that make up the one volume. After some troubleshooting, I now doubt this is the issue, or the *only* issue I should say. I thought that because in the nssdbg.out the disk scan successfully finding the LUNs always happens just after the "new mount registered" entry (sometimes within the same second, which may mean its just a display output that is run after the mount attempt happens). At first I thought maybe the LUNs weren't being scanned by the time the mount attempt happens, triggering the failure (a long standing issue with macs, except they usually retry until successful), and that there may be something needed in order to get it to retry after all LUNs are found. Looking at the nssdbg log after booting and the volume not mounting shows nothing obviously relevant. This indicates there is nothing wrong with the profile, the volume, zoning, etc and the auto mount feature "works" if the system is already booted and I load the profile at that point.Ģ. When I install the profile, the expected volume mounts immediately, no others do, and everything is perfect. There is a profile loaded with both xsan and preference payloads, and onlyMount key set to auto mount one volume (out of several). The problem is only getting the volume to mount on boot, everything else is working fine. ![]() I've been having trouble with auto mount on a 10.11.2 client mac client (the only El Capitan client I've tested with Xsan MDCs) - and dug fairly deep, unsuccessfully. ![]() This became possible only because Candler made large personal loans to facilitate the construction of water and sewer services to the site.
